Road Safety
Safety on Ridges Road, a designated Wisconsin Rustic Road with a 30 mph limit, comes up at nearly every meeting: speed, pedestrians and parked cars at the lower range light, and how cars, walkers, cyclists and Segways share one narrow road. This page collects what the association has gathered on the subject.
Summary memo
Secretary Mitch Leavitt investigated the issue for the membership and wrote up the concerns, the history, the stakeholders, possible interventions, and who has authority over what.
In short: the Rustic Road designation is what let the Town lower the limit from 45 to 30 mph. Any further reduction needs WisDOT approval and a speed study. Widening or adding a bike lane during the 2010 repaving didn’t happen because of endangered plants along the roadside and resident concern for aesthetics. The path forward runs through the Town Board, then the Door County Highway Safety Committee, then WisDOT.
